Glossary – Terms used when talking about the internet

ISP

 Internet Service Provider.
Provides the dial-up / ADSL account that allows you to connect to the internet, most ISP’s will give you generic email addresses e.g. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Email

 Electronic mail.
Is a store and forward method of composing, sending, storing, and receiving messages over electronic communication systems.

Web Server

 A special kind of computer linked to the internet.

Website

 A collection of web (internet) pages, images, videos and other digital assets that is hosted on one or several Web Servers and is accessible via the internet.

Hosting

 The act of keeping a website or a domain (name) on a Web Server so that other internet users can view your website or send you email.

Domain Name

 An unique name registered on the internet that refers to a Web Server where your Website or Email is Hosted e.g. www.yourname.com / .co.za / .net / .org / .co.uk

Email Account

 A “box” allocated to you where Email sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it is kept until you download it to your computer.

Email Alias

 A different Email Address that goes to the same Email Account.

Hosting Space

 How much space your have available on the Web Server where your Domain is Hosted, is measured in Mega Bytes (MB) or Giga Bytes (GB or Gig)

Traffic

 Amount of Mega Bytes your Hosting Company allows to move through your Website.

Domain Transfer

 Move your Domain Name, Email Addresses and Website Hosting from a current provider to our servers.
